Snow Storm-Related Berryville Code Requirements and Restrictions

Please take note of and follow the Berryville Code requirements listed below. Your cooperation during the upcoming storm will assist Berryville Department of Public Works and Virginia Department of Transportation crews in their snow removal operations.

Declaration and Duration of Snow Emergency

In accordance with § 15-19 of the Berryville Code, a snow emergency is in effect when ice begins to form or snow of a depth of two (2) inches or more lies on the streets within the Town. The snow emergency remains in effect for twenty-four (24) hours from the time of the last snow or formation of ice, unless sooner lifted by the town manager.

Snow Emergency Routes

In accordance with § 15-20 of the Berryville Code, the following streets are snow emergency routes:

North Buckmarsh Street

Hermitage Boulevard

Tyson Drive between Hermitage Boulevard and Lincoln Avenue

No vehicle may be parked on designated snow emergency routes during snow emergencies.

Restrictions During Snow Emergency

In accordance with § 15-21 of the Berryville Code, the following restrictions are in effect during a snow emergency:

No vehicle may operate on streets within the Town unless equipped with effective tire chains or effective snow tread tires.

No person may park or abandon a vehicle in the traffic lanes of any street in town or obstruct or impede traffic or snow removal operation on any street in Town.

No vehicle may be parked on designated snow emergency routes during snow emergencies.

Removal of Snow and Ice from Sidewalks

During snow- and ice-related weather events, it is important that sidewalks remain passable for pedestrian traffic.

In accordance with § 15-16 of the Berryville Code, Town residents and property owners are responsible for clearing the sidewalks adjacent to their property. If the total accumulation of snow, sleet, or ice is less than six inches (6”), owners and residents must clear the sidewalks within twelve (12) hours after the precipitation has ceased to fall. If the total accumulation is greater than six inches (6”), owners and residents have twenty-four (24) hours to clear the sidewalks. If the accumulation is difficult to remove without damaging the pavement, then material that renders the sidewalk safe for foot traffic must be applied within twelve (12) hours after the precipitation ceases.

Prohibition Against Depositing Snow on Roadways or Sidewalks

In accordance with § 15-17 of the Berryville Code, snow, sleet, and ice removed from the sidewalk may not be deposited on roadways or sidewalks. Doing so hinders clearing operations and can create roadway hazards on streets that may have already been cleared.

Directing the flow of snow, sleet, or ice from a snow blower onto roadways or sidewalks deposits that material on the surface in question and therefore constitutes a violation of § 15-17 of the Berryville Code.
