The Town Council and the Police Department are highly committed to community oriented policing and crime prevention as the most effective means of law enforcement and protection of the public.

The Department earned state accreditation in December 2021. Fewer than one third of law enforcement agencies in Virginia carry this distinction. This accreditation ensures that the departments maintains the highest professional standards for policing. The process took two years to complete and is reviewed every four years.
In addition to regular policing of the town, the department provides several community services and programs at no cost, including fingerprinting of children for identification purposes, house checks while occupants are out of town for extended periods of time, youth substance abuse awareness and prevention programs, formation and organization of Neighborhood Watch programs, Child Safety Seat Installation/Inspection, bicycle safety and security programs and other public safety and security programs by special arrangement.
